A coaching inn previously stood on this site, with the paddock behind it being used to house and exercise horses.

In the late 18th century an apparently bad-tempered groom working at the inn was killed after one of the horses reared up and kicked him.

His ghost is said to haunt the area where the inn and paddock once stood.
